Abstract
"City" piece on proposals to make Baxter Boulevard in Portland more accessible to bicyclists. A citizen advisory committee devised a solution to the problem of skaters, bikers, walkers and runners bumping into each other on the Back Cove Path, but Portland's historic preservation committee said any attempts to modernize the area must not fundamentally alter the original design. Landscape architect Stephen Mohr and Albert Nickerson of the Maine Olmsted Alliance for Parks and Landscapes have submitted an alternate plan, but City Councilor Cheryl Leeman is not impressed.
