Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece about the luke-warm enthusiasm of Mainers for campaign finance reform, as demonstrated by the fact that only 15 percent of Maine income-tax payers checked the box on their income-tax returns designating that $3 from their return be used to pay for publicly financed campaigns. Ross Connelly, the Republican nominee for Congress in the 1st District, who is searching for a new issue to use against Tom Allen, the Democratic incumbent, might want to consider focusing on Allen's May vote in favor of selling satellite technology to the People's Republic of China, an issue entangled with allegedly illegal campaign contributions to the Clinton administration.
