Abstract

Staff members of Portland West Neighborhood Planning Council's a YouthBuild program are angry with the decision of Portland West's executive director, Ethan Strimling, to layoff seven YouthBuild staff members and to reduce the program from 30 students to only 12 next September. Strimling says that the cut was necessitated by the loss of a $695,505 federal grant used to support the program, which provided young people with job training, primarily in construction, while they also worked toward obtaining their general equivalency degrees. Staff members argue that financial supporters would have stepped forward if Strimling had been more public about the program's problems. Details.
