Abstract
The ambulance division joined the Portland Fire Department in 1981, paving the way for the admission of women into the department, the first two of whom were hired last year. Seven of the 31 ambulance workers are female, as compared with only two of the 220 firefighters. One of the two, Jennifer Shatney, says she hasn't experienced the overt discrimination she was led to expect on the job. The department's role has shifted so that it fights fewer fires but responds to 8,000 ambulance calls a year. Firefighters are cross-trained to respond to medical emergencies.
