Abstract
Residents of Great and Little Diamond Islands are pleased that the state has declared the sand spit between the islands clean enough to reopen clam flats, but are worried that the spit will be damaged by clammers if it is opened. The eroded spit is used by emergency vehicles and garbage trucks, and environmental standards prohibit its fortification. Elevated levels of lead have been found in the water, which may mean the flats will stay closed.
