Abstract

In-depth profile of Sammy Geisinger, 37, father of ten, former streetfighter, and would-be peacemaker in Portland's troubled Bayside neighborhood. Geisinger, who has been arrested for assault at least 80 times, has taken on the role of mentoring teenagers in the neighborhood, where his own connections go back three generations. He is lobbying for a playground to replace the small one on Stone Street. Geisinger suggested that the city throw a block party to ease racial tensions after fighting erupted between Somalian and white teenagers. When it occurred, the block party looked like a success, although Geisinger had to prod the teenagers to participate. With details on the friction in the neighborhood, and what contributes to residents' mistaken perception that immigrants receive more idtdhan their share of social services.
