Abstract

"Comment" piece on an investigation this fall by the U. S. Department of Education into the way the Portland public school system treats immigrant students and minority job applicants. Superintendent Mary Jane McCalmon says she has hired a diversity coordinator to recruit minority teachers. Other questions remain unanswered, such as why Portland offers biology but not English as a Second Language during summer school.
