Abstract
More children in Portland are testing positive for unsafe levels of lead in their blood. Part of the reason for this might be an increase in renovation projects, which raises the level of lead dust that children in affected buildings ingest. Fewer children are being tested overall, which city officials believe might be due to lack of enforcement of a federal law mandating that youngsters on Medicaid be tested annually for lead. Almost half of the 547 kids tested in 1997 tested high for lead. With details on the effects of lead poisoning.
