Abstract
Maineland Consultants, an independent appraisal company hired by the city of Portland, says that the land next to the Fore River where the United States Postal Service (USPS) wants to build a huge processing center is worth $1.26 million. Although the price the USPS is willing to pay has been kept secret, a spokeman said the owners of the 56-acre site, the Snyder and Barris families, "would be foolish to accept the offer." The city, which wants to protect the land, plans to approach the Federal Aviation Administration with a proposal to have that agency reimburse Portland for the purchase of the land, in return for being able to use the preserved wetlands to offset any wetlands destroyed by expansion at the Portland Jetport.
