Abstract
Maine consumers can now choose from over 180 carriers for in-state telephone calls since regulators opened the door to competition in 1997. But many don't look for cheaper phone service because they fear the process is too complicated. Finding the right company can involve a lot of research. To make the task easier, Phil Lindley, an analyst with Maine's Public Utilities Commission, advises consumers to contact the public advocate's office, which publishes a semi-annual Rate Watchers In-State Phone Guide. With "Cheap Deals" and a breakdown of charges, discounts and other relative information on in-state service offered by AT & T, Bell Atlantic, Excel, One Star, Frontier Communications, MCI, Sprint, Touch 1, Var Tec, and World Com.
