Abstract
"So Noted" piece critical of a $651,000 tax break the Portland City Council approved for Bookland, if chain-bookstore owner David Turitz opens a new superstore on Marginal Way in the long-vacant Hot Shots building. The author believes similar incentives should be offered to the small businesses that have kept the Old Port alive and helped the city fend off the economic devastation wreaked on downtown by the Maine Mall or, at the very least, Turitz should be required to issue regular reports on how his new store is making life better for average Portlanders.
