Abstract
"So Noted" piece criticizing the Portland School Committee and the unprecedented pay raises it approved on Dec. 9 for Superintendent Mary Jane McCalmon and six of her top administrators. Herb Adams, who cast the lone dissenting vote, is the only member of the entire committee singled out for praise. In addition to her salary, McCalmon's benefits include 25 vacation days and 18 sick days annually, health care, full dental coverage, free life insurance and annual contributions to her pension fund equalling 9 percent of her salary.
