Abstract
"City" piece on the uneven distribution of school district dollars spent on music education in Portland schools. For example, Deering High spends $79.79 on each student in its band, more than twice as much as Portland High. The figures come from a survey of per-pupil spending on music programs in the Portland schools during the 1998-99 school year compiled by Scott Trach, the coordinator of music programs in Portland's schools and the band director at Deering High. The variations are due, in part, to decisions made by individual principals. With per-pupil music education spending figures for all of the Portland school district's elementary, middle and high schools.
