Abstract

"City" piece on Portland School Committee member Erik Richard, who wants to change current school policies so it will be easier to discuss sexual orientation and hate crimes in city schools. Richards also wants to change the policy that requires students to get permission slips to attend presentations of a sexual nature. Last month, Deering High School principal Brenda Roy invoked the permission-slip regulation to temporarily halt planning for a talk by representatives of Outright, a support group for gay youth.
