Abstract

"So Noted" piece criticizing Portland police chief Mike Chitwood for applying double-standard law enforcement pressure to the city's night spots. The article credits Chitwood with closing the Moon, the Bitter End and, most recently, the Fine Arts community art center, and with trying to close down the Metropolis, all of which have predominantly youthful clienteles. By contrast, bars like Rickey's and Bubba's Sulky Lounge, which serve older clienteles, have been allowed to stay open despite numerous complaints.
