Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on Maine Friends of Animals, which might begin working on a referendum campaign to ban leghold traps and snares. The Humane Society of the United States considered such a campaign but dropped it, believing they will be more successful in some other states. Also information about a rumor, which doesn't seem to have much substance, that former state senator John Hathaway of Kennebunkport might launch a right-wing bid to unseat Republican U.S. senator Olympia Snowe. And mention of Pat LaMarche, the former Green Independent candidate for governor, who now writes a monthly column for the Lewiston Sun Journal called "Beyond Politics."
