Abstract
"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on Maine politicians who have reversed their position on whether a new attempt to pass civil rights legislation for gay men and lesbians should be placed before the voters in a referendum. State treasurer Dale McCormick, Senate president Mark Lawrence, and Susan Farnsworth, a lobbyist for the Maine Lesbian/Gay Political Alliance (MLGPA), all once felt the majority should never decide issues for the minority and they all wanted the Legislature to enact the proposed legislation. But today, they are among those who support a gay rights bill that includes a provision for putting the legislation out to referendum in November 2000. Also with the positions of MLGPA president Betsy Smith, state representatives Mike Saxl and Michael Quint, and state senator Susan Longley.
