Abstract
"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on Maine's Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices and the Maine Clean Election Act, which became effective on Jan. 1. 1999, but neither candidates nor municipal clerks were notified. Some political candidates, including some incumbents, have already accepted campaign contributions that violate the new limits, but they are claiming ignorance of the law, which clearly states that a candidate must accept illegal money "knowingly" for it to be a crime. But any action might be superceded by the courts. In September, the Maine Civil Liberties Union will ask a federal judge in Portland's U.S. District Court to declare the law unconstitutional.
