Abstract
"City" piece on the Portland Public Market, which, to many people, has become a place where yuppies and tourists shop. The market is also plagued by rumors that it is unprofitable and unwelcoming to Portland's Arab, black and Asian entrepreneurs. Rather than respond to those rumors, the market's director, Ted Spitzer, and leaders of its vendors' association skipped scheduled interviews, did not return phone calls and evaded questions about the facility's marketing strategies.
