Abstract
"Sportland" piece on fall surfing at Higgins Beach, a favorite haunt of Portland-area surfers and a place considered one of the best surfing spots in Southern Maine. Higgins is prime during hurricane season. With mentions of surfers Matt Barkley, 24, of Washington, D. C., who designs and installs aquariums around the capital; Ben Sturtevant, 34, a catalog design editor at L. L. Bean, who believes Higgins at its best can match surfing in California; Dana Thurman, owner of Moose County Music and Surf Shops in Portland and Old Orchard Beach; and Jeff Mikeska, 40, a chemist of Santa Barbara, California, who makes Maine surfing an annual ritual.
