Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the small number of young women entering traditionally male-dominated trades. Of 657 students at Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS), just 184, or 28 percent, are female, and only 14 are in male-dominated fields of study, such as automotive mechanics, drafting and welding. Currently, there are no young women enrolled in PATHS programs in carpentry, industrial electricity, machine tooling or plumbing. With observations and comments by individuals and members of groups such as the Center for Diversity/Gender Equity Project at Southern Maine Technical College.
