Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the two sides of state representative Michael Quint, 41, D-Portland. In 1997, Quint came out publicly as a gay man before the Legislature's judiciary committee in an effort to persuade his fellow lawmakers to support civil rights for Maine's sexual minorities. He has also worked hard on issues related to the financially troubled Jackson Brook Institute, the Maine Youth Center, and homeless youth. But he admits that all of his good deeds won't help him get reelected if he doesn't start paying more attention to details. In addition to neglecting to follow-up on commitments and respond to phone calls from constituents, Quint has failed to file campaign finance reports in a timely manner on at least three occasions, and the most recent offense could cost him $3,307 in fines.
