Abstract
The Casco Bay Estuary Project estimates there are 5,000 boats berthed in Casco Bay, while the nonprofit environmental group Friends of Casco Bay puts the number at 1,000. The state says there are 113,590 boats registered in Maine, but an industry group says the number is higher than that. Whatever the final figure, a typical boat engine running for one hour pollutes as much as one car traveling 800 miles. The federal Environmental Protection Agency is currently considering new regulations aimed at engines such as those used by powerboats. Details, related article.
