Abstract
"City" piece on Regional Waste Systems (RWS), which is close to settling a lawsuit against Central Maine Power (CMP). At issue is RWS' current contract with CMP, which represents about 35 percent of RSW' revenue. While the contract requiring CMP to buy power from RWS runs through 2008, the amount CMP pays for that power will decrease at the end of 2000. When that happens, RWS will either have to raise rates for those disposing of trash or become even more reliant on subsidies from the municipalities that own it, and those subsidies come from the property taxes paid by area residents.
