Abstract

"City" piece on Regional Waste Systems (RWS), which settled a lawsuit against Central Maine Power (CMP) on Jan. 19 and accepted a lump-sum buyout of its contract with the electic company for $3.8 million. RWS sued CMP in 1998, seeking to force the electric utility to continue buying power from the incinerator at 10 to 13 cents per kilowatt hour. But market rates for power have declined sharply since then, and the electric company wanted a lower rate.
