Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the gentrification of Munjoy Hill. Historically one of Portland's poorest neighborhoods, the Hill is struggling to shed its reputation as a rough place. According to the Internet's eNeighborhoods, which compiles demographic statistics, the median income of Munjoy Hill residents is $32,507, not far below the $36,216 of Portland residents overall. But the average income of Hill households with children is only $29,458, slightly more than half of the $56,682 overall Portland average for households with children. A survey of 25 homes on the Hill sold in the past year shows a 40 percent rise in median sale price, from $125,000 to $175,000. With details about commercial growth, references to the New Neighbors program, and a brief history.
