Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on a proposal to add a Division III football team to the University of Southern Maine's (USM) athletics program. Professional fund-raiser Keith Citrine has been charged by the Friends of USM Football (FUF) with finding the $2.1 million needed to pay for the team's start-up costs. If Citrine is successful, the first game could be played as early as the fall of 2002. But big donors have so far shown themselves to be less than enthusiastic about the idea because statistics show crowds and revenues would likely be modest. Many USM students and faculty members are on record as opposed or indifferent to the proposal.
