Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on Maine Public Radio (MPR), which has 22,000 members, annual financing totaling over $1.5 million and an impressive weekly audience of 124,000. But MPR is having a difficult time filling News Department vacancies at a time when it is trying to cope with a storm of tensions generated by the costly task of dumping traditional equipment and switching to new high-definition broadcasting technology. With special focus on the recent resignation of News Director Jim Polson just four months after hiring him for the position, and the immense threat to commercial and noncommercial radio stations alike that is being posed by the new digital satellite radio stations, which are targeting listeners with channels devoted to specific niches, everything from reggae to Gregorian chants to hard bop.
