Abstract
"So Noted" piece critical of Portland police chief Michael J. Chitwood, who plans to ask the Portland City Council's public safety committee to back a proposal that would ban drivers within the city from using cell phones while operating a vehicle. The publishment would be $50 for the first offense. Chitwood is accused of using the cell phone issue as just another way of attracting media attention. Such bans are in place in Brookline, Mass., Brooklyn, N.Y., and Suffolk County, New York. With a brief remark about the fact that Casco Bay Weekly's art director, Joanne Amato, who has been with the paper for six years, is leaving for New York City. Assistant art director Jeffrey Clifford has been named to succeed her.
