Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on drug addiction in Maine. Maine Drug Enforcement Agency heroin arrests rose 40 percent in 2000, with seizure of the drug jumping 94 percent over the previous year. According to preliminary state figures, 31 people died of illegal drug overdoses in 1998, and 20 more drug-related deaths were officially considered "suicides." Mark Boesen, executive director of the Maine Association of Substance Abuse Programs, noted that 8,373 adults were admitted for treatment in 1997 out of the 75,600 substance abusers a phone survey estimated to be in need. Funded by $750,000 from the tobacco settlement money, six adult drug courts will begin operating in the state in March.
