Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on Portland artists who prefer not to use the gallery system for showing and marketing their work. High-profile galleries like Aucocisco, Hay and June Fitzpatrick have good reputations and solid connections among the relatively small group of people who regularly purchase artwork in the area. But their services come at a cost: a 50 percent commission on nearly every piece sold. With special focus on Portland artists Everett C. "Skip" Traynor III, Ron Slater, Lisa Pixley, Louise Philbrick, Michael Branca and several members of the Portland art collective Bastard Sons of the Infocalypse (BSI).
