Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the future of classical music in Portland. With special focus on the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Portland String Quartet, the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, and the Portland Opera Repertory Theatre. All are nonprofits, largely dependent on the generosity of corporations and aging, rich people, so they must be careful about choosing music and maintaining a traditional atmosphere that doesn't upset wealthy patrons, even if that causes the next generation of music lovers to turn away. With examples of how some music directors are making attempts to enliven and popularize their music to counter the trend toward older audiences.
