Abstract
"City" piece on Portland's proposed Domestic Partnership Ordinance, which the City Council is scheduled to vote on May 21. According to the ordinance, parochial schools and private day-care centers that receive municipal funds would be required to give same-sex and unmarried heterosexual partners the same access to children's records as they give to married couples. Mark Mutty, director of public affairs for the Catholic Diocese of Portland, said the church will probably consider proposing an amendment to exempt religious organizations, even if they receive city money.
