Abstract
"City" piece on Portland's huge loss of state funding for schools. Despite having eight state representatives and two state senators, including Speaker of the House Mike Saxl, House majority whip Bill Norbert, Appropriations Committee member Rep. Joe Brannigan, and Education Committee member Rep. Glenn Cummings, Portland could lose $600,000 in state funding for schools next fiscal year. Last year, term limits forced out three of Portland's state representatives, including Appropriations Committee Co-Chair Eliza Townsend, Education Committee Co-Chair Michael Brennan and House Speaker Steve Rowe, resulting in considerably less municipal clout.
