Abstract
"City" piece on the Maine Speakout Project, a Portland-based gay advocacy program begun in 1995 that has run out of money to pay its deputy director, David Swander, and fund a nationwide expansion. Swander was dismissed after it became evident projections the group would raise $100,000 above its annual $160,000 budget had been overestimated. A new satellite office in New York City also was closed, and the group's executive director, Jonathan Lee, said he gave himself a pay cut of $5,000, reducing his salary to $40,000.
