Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on Ethan Strimling, 33, of Portland, executive director of the Portland West Neighborhood Planning Council, a nonprofit agency that serves low-income people and at-risk youth. Strimling made an unsuccessful run for an at-large seat on the Portland City Council in 1999, and plans to run for the state Senate in 2002 as a publicly financed Clean Election candidate. But Sen. Anne Rand, D-Portland, who will be forced out of office next year by term limits, has already endorsed Strimling's opponent in the Democratic primary election, state represenative Michael Quint of Portland. Strimling's supporters say he's intelligent, hardworking and dedicated to improving people's lives. But his opponents say he's power-hungry, slick and phony. With details about Strimling's and Quint's planned Senate primary campaigns.
