Abstract
"City" piece on state liquor stores in Portland. The store on St. John Street will close for good on Oct. 27. All of the inventory and two of its three employees will be transferred to the state store in Windham. A third worker will be laid off. Three new agency liquor licenses have been issued to retailers in the city: the Shaw's supermarkets in the West Gate and North Gate shopping centers, and Maine Beer and Beverage for its Commercial Street location. Across the state, eight state liquor stores are being closed, including those in Brewer, Bangor, Mexico, Old Orchard Beach and the discount store in Kittery, leaving only 19 state stores in business. The closings are part of Gov. Angus King's plan to get the state out of the retail liquor business.
