Abstract
"City" piece on new Portland mayor Karen Geraghty, who is throwing a private party, at the expense of taxpayers, celebrate her inauguration . Public money has paid for such celebrations in the past, and the average cost over the last three years has been about $5,000. But Geraghty's event comes as the city is laying of workers and facing a possible $12-million shortfall in next year's budget. Geraghty's party, scheduled for Jan. 26 at the Center for Cultural Exchange in Portland, is an invitation-only event, featuring live music, dance performances and food catered by several area restaurants.
