Abstract
"City" piece on the increasing numbers of Maine babies that are being born addicted to the narcotic drug methadone. With more pregnant women taking methadone in an effort to kick their heroin, OxyContin, Percoset or other opiate addiction, concern about how safe the synthetic narcotic is on the growing fetus is growing. According to the state Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services, in 2000, only one pregnant woman in Cumberland County sought methadone treatment, while last year six did. Statewide during the same period, the number went from one to nine. But many say those numbers are grossly underreported.
