Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on University College (UC), the University of Maine's (UM) controversial distance-education program. The virtual college, formerly known as EdNet, connected classrooms on its seven campuses to 10 remote satellite centers around the state, where students could watch campus classes and interact by phone. The program also provided instruction via video-and audio-tapes and text-based materials for students who couldn't get to the centers. EdNet opened in 1989 with 1,500 students. This year, UC registered more than 11,000 students. It currently generates $7.4 million on a $3.1 million budget, with a staff of just 71. UC satellite campuses include Saco/Biddeford, Bath/Brunswick, Sanford, Thomaston, Ellsworth, East Millinocket, Dover-Foxcroft, Calais, Houston and Rumford/Mexico.
