Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on unemployment in Maine, which went from 2.5 percent last year to 4.5 percent this year, reflecting a national trend, according to Charles Colgan, professor of public policy at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. Figures for the Portland metro area show 906 people were collecting full unemployment for an average of 14 weeks in 2001, as compared to 1,069 who collected for 15 to 16 weeks this year. With information provided by the Unemployed Professionals group at the Portland Career Center, Pro Search, Employment 1, the state Department of Labor, the Maine Bureau of Employment Services and others.
