Abstract

The Portland Police Department last summer started a pilot program for community policing, housed in the Parkside Community Center on the first floor of an apartment building at 131 Sherman Street. The department is now ready to employ community policing throughout the city, leading some residents and police officers to wonder what exactly community policing is and how effective it can be.
