Abstract
Maine commissioner of education Wayne Mowatt has cancelled the Maine Educational Assessment test because it contained a question about two poems he claimed made references to suicide. A recent series in The Portland Newspapers on suicide sparked the move, and prompted Gov. King to announce he would convene a roundtable on suicide. Although the series said that the suicide rate among young Mainers has been climbing, the number of Mainers between the ages of 10 and 24 who took their own lifes has decreased from 38 in 1989 to 29 in 1993.
