Abstract
The Portland Police Department on March 27 mailed consent to search forms to landlords in the city's Parkside neighborhood, which, if signed by the landlords, will allow officers to search common areas of apartment buildings without a warrant. Police Lt. Tim Burton, who oversees the project as part of the city's community policing effort, believes giving police blanket permission to patrol the common areas will allow the police to maintain a more visble presence, thus deterring crime.
