Abstract

Laura Trice, 26, who last month received her M.D. from the University of Vermont, on June 9 crossed the Million Dollar Bridge topless to protest the double standard that allows men but not women to go shirtless in public. Portland and South Portland police threatened to arrest Trice if she failed to put her shirt back on. Trice showed them copies of Maine's public indecency statute, and the officers conceded that the statute did not apply and let her continue.
