Abstract

Portland has 388 elevators, and 291 of those have expired inspection certificates. Bill Peabody, deputy director of the Maine Bureau of Labor Standards, says within the next couple of months potentially every elevator in the city will be out-of-date. Until 1994, the state had two elevator inspectors, but both positions are currently open, and the state is having difficulty finding a qualified person to fill the chief inspector position. Details.
