Abstract

Article on Maine mice. The most common native mouse in Maine is the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), which is also mistakenly called the white-footed mouse (Permyscus leucopus). Maine's most fascinating mouse is the meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius). Although widespread throughout the state, the common house mouse (Mus musculus) is not actually indigenous to Maine. It is native to Europe but emigrated to the North American continent, probably with early settlers such as the Pilgrims.
