Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on Larry Warren, and his Western Mountains Foundation, which hopes to build a 180-mile long trail from Bethel to Moosehead Lake, featuring 12 huts for hikers, mountain bikers and cross-county skiiers. Pat McGowan, commissioner of the Department of Conservation, supports the project, citing economic development opportunities in northern Maine. The biggest opposition to the trail proposal came last year with the announcement that the route would traverse eight miles of the remote Bigelow Preserve on the south shore of Flagstaff Lake. With comments by Lance Tapley, one of the original organizers of the Bigelow campaign.
