Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the emergency closure of the Waldo-Hancock bridge to vehicles weighing more than twelve tons, forcing them to take a 40-mile detour to cross the Penobscot River in Bangor. The closure was announced July 11 after the Maine Department of Transportation warned that the twin cables supporting the bridge's roadbed were badly deteriorated. The bridge is vital to local economies, and many have seen a drastic decrease in business since the shutdown. Details.
