Abstract

Article about the reclusive Miss Mary Jane Emerson Clapp of Portland who was born into one of Portland's most prestigious families in 1835 and who, upon her death on Sept. 9, 1920, left a most curious will that startled the residents of Portland. Among other things, her will directed the destruction of her family coach, her luxurious Pierce Arrow, and even the family's large and elegant mansion on Congress St. She also directed that a pair of candlesticks be placed with her in the coffin.
